It just got implemented this way to hit the deadline, and to provide the folks who have been waiting for tables of content in multi-view with something to tide them over. Again, this is just temporary, until 3.1 rolls around (which really shouldn't be that long). 3.0.0 is mostly just to encapsulate "the rewrite." I would likely have several posts right in a row belonging to the same series and the in-series links would be repeated all over my front page. I kinda like having the TOC and other links in the single view only.
