In Series 2.2.2

Two fixes, one minor, and one just embarrassing…

  • Allow the ToC to be placed back on the bottom after setting it to top.
  • Add classes to the elements of the automatically-inserted next/previous links.

Get In Series 2.2.2.

Thank you my friend for the quick fix regarding the ToC positioning. Works like a charm :-)

Hallelujah!! It’s at the bottom now! You rock!

Still not showing in multi-post mode though. Arg. Curses! ;)

Is there any documentation for In Series ? So far I’ve been able to figure out most of it by trial and error but a basic overview of the options would be nice.

Would it be possible to have an option for TOC or Next/Prev links at both Top and Bottom ?

An easier method for reordering articles within a series would be a nice addition.

Would it be possible to insert a link to show the entire series in series order on a page like a category page ?

Thanks for the great work. This plugin fills a major hole in WordPress.

Well, yes and no. Lorelle wrote up some documentation (the in-series.txt file) a while back, but it’s woefully out of date. Her fingers are strained as it is, and I’d just feel awful asking her to rewrite it on my account — so it’s on my “to do” list. There are also some screenshots, but that doesn’t really count as documentation. Ideally, you should just be able to pick it up and go. Nobody RTFMs anyway — while that’s not a valid excuse to perpetually not have a manual, it is good enough for the current docs to be out of date until I finish my rewrite. :)

I’ll be sure to keep a “both” option in mind as a new feature for ToC and next/prev link placement. While I’d never want that on my own site, it’s a perfectly valid (and do-able) ask.

Reordering articles is a pain to do in the back-end. I’m going to fix that in my rewrite. However, I still would like UI ideas for how to let the user do re-ordering. Minimally, it has to…

    • Work without Javascript,
    • Be intuitive
    • Not take up a bunch of screenspace
    • Allow the most common reordering tasks to be done quickly

I almost think that this will require a completely separate, dedicated “re-order a series” page, because the task seems too complicated to accomplish in the “write” page’s sidebar.

As far as auto-generating a series page, that would be nice, but it’s a more advanced feature that’s going to have to wait a little while. There are all sorts of thorns associated with it (how to name it? How to fit it in the user’s permalink structure? Page or post? etc.). I also think that having a series-tracking RSS feed option would be pretty slick (but at that point, you might have enough articles to just make a category out of them).

Thanks. All in all this is still a wonderful addition and solved a major problem for me. As for the reordering, I think a very simple UI on the post write/edit page that shows the current position and a move up/down button pair are all that would be necessary.

Thanks again for your excellent work.

Following up on the reorder request. Have a look at the “My Link Order” plugin for interface and possibly some coding inspiration. It’s clean and simple and may possibly relate directly to this situation. URL: http://www.geekyweekly.com/mylinkorder

    Thanks again.

I think I am having the same issue of the title of the series not showing on a multople posting page, but is showing on a single posting page. The Next Series is also jammed up against my Tags, so most of the time it is not noticed.

Thanks for the link; I’ll certainly check it out. Solving already-solved problems is generally an amusing waste of time, but I’ll opt for “tested” over “amusing” on this one, since I’m not much of a UI guy. :)

    @Kevin Baggs

Can you provide me with links to pages that demonstrate the problems you describe?

If you go to my blog at http://kevinbaggs.com and look at the first Podcasting 101: Posting post. The Previous in Series is there, but no TOC. Then if you click on the title. You will see the TOC at the bottom. But it doesn’t show up on the main blog page.

All right; just wanted to make sure. The behavior you’re describing is a known issue. I’ll get an option in for that, hopefully in the next release.
